Brown's Island Moonlight Paddle

 Leaders Russ & Larraine

There is something magical about paddling under a full moon .

Meet at the concrete boat ramp in the middle of St Heliers Bay (opposite Goldie Street) at 4.30pm and on the water at 5pm.

We will land at the beach facing the city, or go around the back and climb to the top, have dinner, and watch the sun going down over the city as we paddle back in the dark.
Warm clothes are a must.

Bring:
  • Your normal paddling gear.
  • Deck light, white all-round, 1m above the deck  (a snap light is acceptable)
  • Torch to signal vessels if needed, hi vis on your PFD or add a hi vis jacket.
  • Something for dinner, and something warm to put on - it can get chilly if you are damp.
  • A torch/ head torch to help you get sorted out when we are back on the beach.
Bring food and water – there is no water on the island. There are no toilets on the island, but there is some long grass and some nice bushes.

We cross the channel which can be busy, with boat traffic including ferries to/from the city. On the return trip in poor light, being visible is even more essential.  So the group will stay close together, and the gear list for a night paddle will help us all stay safe.

Suitable for confident beginners if the wind is below 15 knots.  Total distance is about 8km, crossing open water which can get a bit lumpy.  Plan B if it is windy, paddle along the waterfront to Okahu Bay and return.

Browns Island is free of animal pests.  Please check your kayak and gear for rats, mice, insects (including Argentine ants) and weed seeds. For more information on what you can do to help to keep our Treasure Islands pest free...
