Motuihe Weekend

Motuihe Island, 25-27 January, Anniversary weekend.  Leader is Ian Cheesman

The quietest place to camp in Auckland on a busy weekend, plus a good viewing position for Monday's Sailing Regatta, see information here...

Saturday 25th Meet at St Heliers at 10am. On water 11am.  We have 10km to Motuihe passing Browns Island, stopping if we wish for a walk to the top.

Sunday 26th. Option 1, paddle to Rangitoto wharf, ice cream and walk to the summit, 16km return. Option 2, Waiheke Island for coffee 11km return. Option 3, Rakino Island, 22km return.

Monday 27th, quiet morning viewing regatta, or time for a walk if you prefer. Around 1.30pm on the water back to Kohimarama 10km.

Bring a trolley if you have one as campground is 100 meters or so above the beach.

Motuihe is a basic campground. Just toilets, but they do flush. Bring all camping gear plus I suggest 3 litres of fresh water. There is a tap with spring water - boiling/treating recommended.

You must book your own campsite at http://www.doc.govt.nz/motuihecampsite.  If you book Captain's campsite there is some shade and we can all be together.

You will need to take - usual kayaking safety gear including hi-viz, flags etc; full camping gear; all food.
On the island there are flush toilets, and that is all.  You need to take everything else with you.  There is a small shop that is sometimes open in the summer and it sells ice-creams but not much else.

Suitable for confident beginners.   However, we are crossing open water which can get choppy, windy, and lots of boat traffic if the weather is nice.
Suitable for those who are new to kayak camping - there will be plenty of assistance with packing your kayak, and also with setting up your campsite if required.

A suggested gear list is available from Larraine - email yakkas.auckland@gmail.com
