Norway is a long way from New Zealand and it came to my attention that some tour members may want to see a little more of Norway after the trip that is not kayak based. Below is a tour that I (Nic, our guide) have put together that maybe of interest.

After exploring the Sognefjord to the north it’s a must to see the Hardangerfjord to the south. The Hardagner area is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Norway with two national parks, two national tourist routes, fjords, orchards, waterfalls and glaciers.

Trip Highlights
  • Explore the full length of the Hardanger fjord, Norway's second longest
  • An area of majestic mountains, roaring waterfalls and idyllic orchards
  • Hike to the famous Trolltunga (Troll’s tongue) one of the Norway’s most spectacular rock formations
  • Stay two nights in a fjord side “tun” (small cluster..) and only accessible by a boat on the fjord
  • Experience Rosendal, a small village surrounded by majestic alps mountains where we explore the residence of Norway's only Baron built in the 17th century
  • Visit Bryggen in Bergen which has become a symbol of our cultural heritage and is on UNESCO's World Heritage List
  • Soak in the colourful Bergen harbour with its hub of commerce, seafaring and craftsmanship.

For decades Hardanger has been one of the most important tourist destinations in Norway. The attractions that drew visitors to Hardanger more than 100 years ago are the same attractions that draw tourists today. Hardanger is also Norway's orchard with many farm shops selling local specialties. We explore Rosendal which is situated towards the entrance of the fjord is Norway’s only manor with beautiful gardens and stepped in history. Finally we arrive in the country's second largest city Bergen, where we explore and soak in the culture and atmosphere.

Day 1 Kjellandbu Mountain Cabin a locals secret.
Leaving Voss behind we head West and drive to the mountain plateau overlooking Voss. Today's hike is a locals secret and takes the northern most arm of the Hardangerfjord and to the cabin of Kjellandbu where we have lunch. This is superbly located on the mountain
Løkjedalsnuten with impressive views of Botnen, Fyksesund and the Folgefonna glacier across the Hardanger Fjord. We then drive to the heart of the Hardanger fjord, crossing over the world’s longest suspension bridge, and staying at a private ‘hytta’ on the side of the fjord.  Walking: 3 hours gaining 200 meters.

Day 2 Trolltunga
Tucked away between fjords, villages and towns, you will find some of the most beautiful and breathtaking rock formations in Norway. It is situated at 1,100 metres above sea level and around 700 metres above Ringedalsvannet lake in Skjeggedal. People come here from all over the world to go on the impressive walk to Trolltunga, a walk that has become world famous.
Walking: 7.5 hours

Day 3
Fruit farms and the manor from 1665 between fjords, glaciers, mountains and waterfalls. Driving towards to the entrance to the fjord we pass small fruit farms and local industries. At Rosendal have a guided tour of the Manor and its famous rose garden, art exhibition and
Kvinnherad church which was built during the middle to late 13th century. Our accommodation is on the site of the manor.

Day 4
Bergen is on a Norwegian scale, a large city, but one with a smalltown charm and atmosphere. It’s passionately patriotic inhabitants are proud of their many-sided city and its history and cultural traditions. The old Hanseatic wharf is architecturally unique and is perhaps
one of the most familiar image in all of Norway. Ever since the intrepid King Olav Kyrre sailed into the harbour and founded the city in 1070, Bergen has attracted people from all quarters of the world. Some came and went, others decided to make Bergen their home. “Bergensere” travelled abroad and learned and so Bergen became a melting-pot of cultures and Norway's most international city. The day includes a guided tour of Bryggen Museum as we wander through Bergen's past, spanning 900 years of history.
We take a trip on the Fløibanen funicular which is one of Norway’s best-known attractions.
Fløibanen is found in the heart of Bergen, 150 m from Fisketorget – the fish market.
The day is rounded off by a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Our hotel is situated 4min walk from the central fish market and Bryggen.
