Otamure Bay, Northland

Labour weekend 21-24 October.  Leader is Rob

Otamure Bay is about 30 km north of Whangarei, near Whananaki North.

We will base ourselves at Otamure Bay DOC campsite. Please make your own campsite booking...

Getting there - Go past Hikurangi on SH1. Turn off SH1 at Whananaki North Road, which becomes Rockell Road, and travel 27 km. The campsite is 4 km past Whananaki shop and school.

From here we have Sandy Bay, Wooleys Bay and Whale Bay one of the most beautiful parts of the Northland coast, and going north we have the Rimariki Islands and Mimiwhangata.

Suitable for intermediate paddlers. We will try to arrange car pooling where necessary.

You will need to take the usual kayak safety gear, camping gear and food etc. Also helmet for rock-gardening and trolley if you have one.

UPDATE
  • If you are planning on getting there after 2000hrs (8pm) the gate will be closed so you will need to park on the road and walk in.
  • If you have wheels will be a good idea to take them as the beach is a good 250-500m.
  • If you want to rock garden PLEASE bring a helmet - available for $5 per day from C&K.
  • We will have a shared dinner on Saturday evening, so please bring some food to share

Fishing, walking and snorkeling are all available in the area if you want some variety, or if non-paddling family members would like to come.
