Whananaki weekend

Friday 1 to Monday 4th June - a long weekend (Fri night - Monday) in the beautiful near north.
Leader: Joya Todd + one other (yet to be co-opted. Volunteer leaders welcomed :-))

So - why go to Whananaki?

If the weather is good then there is great rock gardening along the coast and possibly seals lounging around too. As always, helmets are recommended if you plan on going near rocks. If you don't have your own helmet, you can pick one up at the shop, either buy or hire.

This trip is suitable for all levels including beginners. If you need a hire kayak, we will endeavour to get it transported for you if you can't do it yourself - please advise when registering.

If the weather is not so good, there is a river paddle to see the NZ brown duck (rare), a big estuary to muck about in and a bar which has surf of varying sizes to suit almost everyone depending on which end of the bar you go to. The tide will be high mid to late mornings which allows launching from the campground but at lower tides we need to use cars to go to the boat ramp which is less than a kilometer away. Take your trolley if you have one.

If you don’t want to get wet in the sea, there is the Southern Hemisphere’s longest foot bridge to stroll across. Or, take a bike and ride the length of the beach and into the hills at the other end. There are lots of good walks in this area at both ends of the beach so there is no shortage of things to do - bring your family if they are interested in land activities.

The camp ground

Whananaki Holiday Park has motel units (for 2 people), tourist flats (for 4), cabins (for 5) and family units (for 8) as well as powered and unpowered campsites. Larraine may be able to coordinate you into a shared unit/cabin.

Take your own food, I don't know what eating-out places there may, or may not be in the area.
