150619-Mid-Winter Xmas at Sandspit with Shelley

Once again Shelley is hosting the midwinter Xmas camp at Sandspit which is a highlight of YY's Auckland Regions winter calendar.

Leaders are Shelley, Joya and Rob

We will base ourselves at Sandspit Holiday Park, http://sandspitholidaypark.co.nz/

This is just an hour north of Auckland and a lovely place to stay.

The water front cabins are pretty good and when the tide is in you can sit on the doorstep and almost dangle your feet in the water.

Cabins need to be booked.

The camp has reserved some cabins for us so let them know you are with Yakity Yak Kayak Club when you make your booking, phone 09 4258610

Cabins range from $70 to $120 per night for 2 people then $18 per extra adult. They have different sized cabins which sleep from 2 to 9 people.

If you book a cabin and have spare beds then let us know so we can tell those who want to share a cabin and make it cheaper.

There should be plenty of campsites available at this time of year if you prefer to tent.

BYO sleeping bag, wine, pots, plates, utensils and tea towels.

Friday travel up and we can meet at the Matakana Village Pub for dinner, 7pm at 11 Matakana Valley Road. Otherwise there are takeaways at Matakana or you can cook at the camp.

Saturday morning we are planning to paddle up to Matakana and visit the markets. High tide is 10.08am which will work out perfectly. We’ll be back in plenty of time to get the Christmas dinner underway.

Saturday night we will have a shared Christmas dinner. Shelley will do a baked ham. We’ll need roast veges, greens, cooked chooks, salad, puddings, nibbles etc.

Let us know what food you would like to bring so we can ensure we have enough of the right stuff.

Bring a small gift for the Secret Santa, maximum of $10 .

Don’t forget to wear all your Christmas bling and Santa hats!

Sunday we can paddle up the coast to Jones Bay or Tawharanui or we can go down the coast to Martins Bay or out to Kawau or Beehive Islands. There are lots of options and Joya will lead a paddle suitable for beginners.

Take a helmet if you want to play in the rocks, a trolley could be useful as the tide goes out a long way.

Hire Kayaks are available and the trailer will be going if necessary.

If the weather is bad there are plenty of options. Lots of good walks in the area, Matakana Markets, Brick Bay Sculpture Park, Vineyards and wine tasting, Ferry to Kawau, Movies, Galleries, Cafes etc…….

How about bringing your non-kayaking family along for the weekend?
