Kawau Up Close with Ruth. 12 - 13 August

If you’ve done the Kawau Island tourist trail, come and meet the locals.

Play i-spy snooping up Bon Accord Harbour checking out the wee and not so wee baches; discover the hidden lagoon and/or waterfall.

On the next day put on your walking shoes, and climb Mt Taylor (only 150m high and an easy 2 hours). Spot a wallaby, wood pigeon, weka, kaka...and in the afternoon explore North Cove’s ‘cripple-creek’ and Starboard Arm by kayak before paddling back to Martins Bay. On the Saturday night we’ll crank up the spa, light up the fire and share a pot-luck dinner...and maybe pull up the ‘Mexican-train’.

To come, you’ll need to be comfortable crossing 7km of open sea to Kawau from Martins Bay, and living as a ‘family’.

Sleeping accommodation will be on beds/mattress in an open-plan sleep-out (rented from my neighbours) or open-plan mezzanine floor (at our house). Both have flush loo and hot shower. Cost to cover the rental will be $15 each.

BYO food and drinks and something to share for Saturday night’s meal. An oven, stove-top, microwave, BBQ and fridge will be available.

Bring sleeping bag and towel. No need to bring cookers or sleeping mats. Both accommodations have fridge, toaster, electric jug for making Sunday’s breakfast and lunch.

Bring usual winter paddling gear and wheels if you have them. Bring walking shoes, wee back-pack, rain-coat.

Meet at Martins Bay beachfront carpark. Meeting dates, times and tides are below – we need to be on the water 30 mins after this.
