BIKE RIDE SUNDAY 12 November 2017 with Neil Watson
Waiheke Island – Matiatia to Rocky Bay return
38km approx. Takes 5 to 6 hours including pit stop at the Saratoga Winery.
If the ride is cancelled, the back-up day is Sunday 26 November. Neil will email cancellation a couple of days ahead.
This ride is mostly hilly.Will suit those who are fit and have ridden on roads.
It’s is all on-road but traffic is fairly sparse.
Surface varies: mostly tarseal with some unsealed bits.
The ride is OK for road bikes with a bit of tyre tread, and mountain bikes.
The itinerary and route (bring a map of Waiheke Island if you can get one)
Meet 20A Francis Street, Takapuna 8:00am. On your bike by 8:30am
Francis Street to Devonport Ferry Terminal (5km) via the Green Route
Catch 9:10am ferry to Waiheke Island (Matiatia Ferry Terminal) $36 return/adult. Purchase ticket at Devonport Ferry Terminal. Arrive Matiatia about 10:00am
Matiatia Ferry Terminal to Oneroa to Palm Beach (6.1km) via Goodwin Avenue, Hauraki Road, Cory Road, Hill Road, Tiri View Road and Palm Road
Palm Beach to Onetangi (4.5km) via Palm Road, Bay Road, Crescent Road, View Road, Seaview Road and The Strand
Onetangi to Omiha Bay (5.9km) via Fourth Avenue, Onetangi Road, O’Brien Road and Omiha Road. Lunch at the Saratoga Winery on the way (TBC). Option – stretch the legs on a short walk from Omiha Bay to Rocky Bay (about 2.5km return). Should be warm enough for a swim!
Omiha Bay to Ostend (4.5km) via Omiha Road, O’Brien Road, Ostend Road and Belgium Road.
Ostend to Surfdale to Matiatia Ferry Terminal (6.6km) via Belgium Road, Wharf Road, Causeway Road, Alison Road, Mitchell Road, Miami Avenue, Hamilton road, The Esplanade, Tui Road and Ocean View Road
Catch 4:00pm ferry to Devonport Ferry Terminal. Arrive Devonport about 4:40pm
Devonport Ferry Terminal to 20A Francis Street (5km) via the “Green Route”. Arrive Francis Street about 5:15pm.
Food, ice cream and loos at Oneroa, Onetangi and Surfdale. Loos at Palm Beach, Omiha Bay and Ostend.
The rules and etiquette
Bring your wet weather gear, repair kit, snacks and water.
Give way to pedestrians on walkways and shared paths. Good idea to get a bell to warn pedestrians when approaching from behind.
