YYNS Pohutukawa Coast Bike Ride with Neil Watson 4 March 2018

Pohutukawa Coast – Omana to Maraetai Forest Return Loop. This ride links a series of parks, beaches and the Maraetai Forest.  

18km approx. Takes about 2 hours depending on pit stops and swimming. If the ride is going to be cancelled, Neil will email cancellation a couple of days ahead.

This ride is flat to undulating. Surface varies: mostly tarseal with some unsealed bits.

There is a short section (1.5km) on Maraetai Road which is posted at 100kph.

The ride is OK for road bikes with a bit of tyre tread, and mountain bikes.

Will suit all levels of rider.

The itinerary and route

Meet at the Omana Regional Park at 10am. Park at the big “P” in the middle of the park (see map

file:///C:/Users/Watson/Downloads/omana-map.pdf ).

On your bike by 10.30am.

  • Omana Park to Te Puru Sports Ground. Ride from the park towards Beachlands on the connecting pathways (Maraetai – Beachlands). Ride around the park on the perimeter track starting at the bottom carpark (see map) to Te Puru Park. Look out for the signs for the connecting pathways (Maraetai – Beachlands)

  • Te Puru Park to Pine Harbour. Ride around the park and follow the signs past the tennis courts/skate park to Beachlands on the connecting pathways. Ride along Second View Ave until the end of the road turn left and ride onto the connecting pathways. Stay on the coast path and ride into Pine Harbour Marina. Follow the paths and ride around the marina or stop in for a cafe/pub stop.

  • Pine Harbour to Okaroro Drive. From Pine arour ride up Jack Lachlan Rd past Formosa Golf Course. At the end of the road turn right onto the Main Rd (Whitford Maraetai Rd) – be careful as this is at 100km road. Keep well left. You are only on this road for a short time (about 1.5km)

  • Okaroro Drive to Maraetai Forest. Turn left into Okaroro Dve and ride to the end of the road. On the left side go through the gate and ride up the road to the sewage treatment plant (you are now on private land). At the top of the hill you will see a stile. Here, lift your bike over the stile and ride along for a short time (very slippery if wet) and stop when you see the next stile. Lift your bike over the fence. You are now in the Maraetai Forest

  • Maraetai Forest to Maraetai Beach. Follow the forest gravel road – you will see roads and tracks going off to the right. Keep to the left to stay on the loop ride. Keep riding until you come out of the forest and you can see Waiheke Island ahead and Maraetai below you. Ride down the hill to the gate and then you are on Rewa Rd until you get to the beach.   • Maraetai Beach to Omana Regional Park. Ride from the beach past the Boat club and through their car park to Tracey’s walkway along the coast (this is on the left as you come out of Rewa Rd. Follow this walk way and Coast Rd back to Omana Regional Park and takes you past Ohinerangi and Te Pene Beaches.

The rules and etiquette

Bring your wet weather gear, repair kit, snacks and water.

Give way to pedestrians on walkways and shared paths. Good idea to get a bell to warn pedestrians when approaching from behind.
