YYNS Takapuna to Half Moon Bay Bike Ride with Neil Watson 25 February 2018

BIKE RIDE SUNDAY 25th FEBRUARY 2018 with Neil Watson (changed from the 18 Feb)

Takapuna to Half Moon Bay return. This trip follows a number of Auckland’s Eastern Cycleways and ferry routes.  

34km approx. Takes 5 hours. Lunch at Half Moon Bay (A&J Café, Grangers Restaurant or Marina Thai Restaurant or BYO).

If the ride is going to be cancelled, Neil will email cancellation a couple of days ahead.

This ride is flat (about 21km) and hilly (about 13km).

A bit over 50% is on paved off-road cycleways

Surface varies: concrete/asphalt/tarseal with a small section of gravel (3km)

The ride is OK for road bikes with a bit of tyre tread and mountain bikes.

Will suit those who are reasonably fit and have ridden on Auckland’s roads.

 

The itinerary and route (bring a street map covering the ride)

Meet outside 20A Francis Street, Takapuna at 8am. On your bike by 8.30am

  • Francis Street to Devonport Ferry Terminal (5km) via the Green Route. Catch the 9am ferry to Auckland. Bring your HOP card or $12 fare for return trip. Buy a return ticket at the Auckland Ferry terminal when we arrive, and a one-way ticket for Half Moon Bay to Auckland $10

  • Auckland terminal to St Heliers Bay (11km) via the Quay Street and  Tamaki Drive shared cycleways

  • St Heliers to Point England (5.5km) via Cliff Road, Riddell Road, Kildare Avenue, Chesterfield Avenue, Rochdale Avenue, Riddell Road, Crosfield Road, Washington Avenue and Elstree Avenue

  • Point England to Panmure Bridge (2.5km) via Point England Road, Riverside Avenue, Dunkirk Road, Riverside Avenue, Queen/Bridge Street?

  • Panmure Bridge to Half Moon Bay (5km) via Lagoon Drive, the Rotary Shared Path (alongside the Tamaki River), Curacao Place, Venus Place, William Brian?, Eclipse?, Falstaff?, Clyside Avenue, Prince Regent Drive, Pigeon Mountain Road and  Ara-Tai?. Lunch at A&J Café, Grangers Restaurant or Marina Thai Restaurant.

  • Catch the 1.15pm ferry from Half Moon Bay ferry terminal to the Auckland ferry terminal. The next ferry to Auckland is at 3.45pm

  • Catch the 2pm ferry from Auckland to the Devonport ferry terminal. This ferry runs on the half hour ‘til 10pm

  • Devonport to 20A Francis Street (5km) via Green Route.

 

The rules and etiquette

Bring your wet weather gear, repair kit, snacks and water.

Give way to pedestrians on walkways and shared paths. Good idea to get a bell to warn pedestrians when approaching from behind.
