AROUND THE SHORE CHALLENGE - 2013

Sunday 14th April 2013 with Di Scoones and Richard Saysell.

HW 1006 3.1M

So you think you have what it takes to challenge the reigning Yakity Yak Kayak King           (Greg Morrison (2 yrs in a row)) or Queen (Diana Austin) of the Auckland Club.

Here is a chance to prove you can beat the best, with a race or cruise in the 3rd Annual Albany to Torbay or Albany to Mairangi Bay Round the Shore Challenge.  This is open to all Yakity Club members, and is restricted to standard Sea Kayaking Kayaks, i.e. sealed flotation compartments front and rear.

We also especially welcome participants from outside the North Shore Club.

As we did at the last running we will split into 2 sections.

The Gung Ho division is for those who think they have the speed and stamina to be the best, finishing at Waiake (Torbay).

Or if you prefer to do it with style as well as stamina you can cruise in the Latte division which will finish at Mairangi Bay, with coffee stops on the way.

Needless to say Richard will again be leading (hopefully not from the rear) the Gung Ho’s with Di leading the Latté’s.

The plan is to meet at Kell Park in Albany at the following times, the Latte section leaving first and the Gung Ho’s 45 min later.

Division          Meet    Brief   Start
Latte                0915    0935    0945
Gung Ho         1000    1020    1030

This should ensure we all arrive at the finish around the same time.

The distance is 39K to Torbay and should take around 4 -5 Hrs (Record to beat is 3H 46m 8sec for the King and 4Hrs 10 min for the Queen).
The Latte route is 35K, and will probably take an hour or so longer with the planned stop at Torpedo Bay and other unplanned stops at miscellaneous places on the way.

There will be a compulsory safety and split times check in by passing under Torpedo Bay Wharf under North Head. This is a good mid way leg stretch and toilet and coffee break at the Navy Museum, but a stop is not compulsory.

After finishing at Waiake the Gung Ho’s recover their vehicles and meet up with the Latte Group at Mairangi Bay Beach, for yarn spinning, refreshments (BYO) and Sausage sizzle on the beachfront.  (A donation from participants to cover the costs would be appreciated.) Latte can recover their vehicles as convenient after the event.

The logistics of recovering or positioning vehicles will be left to individuals, but, if you can’t find a support person, we would suggest you pair up with a mate, meet at the finish, leave one vehicle there and drive with both boats to the start at Kell Park leaving the other vehicle there. After the event it is a relatively short drive to recover the Kell park vehicle.

The put in at Kell Park (behind the Albany shops on the left side (going North)) preferably requires wheels to get down the North Heading ramp in the centre of the Park which leads down to the jetty.  Parking is unrestricted on Sundays.

For Safety reasons because the Gung Ho division are likely to be well strung out, the ability to self rescue is paramount.  The carrying of some form of communication (VHF or Cell Ph) will be a requirement.  There are no support vessels. Also because we are in busy traffic lanes all the way from Greenhithe, High Visibility clothing and a Flag is essential. PFD’s must also be worn at all times

The Latte division will remain in pod formations so can be a little more relaxed on the communications requirements.

There are numerous pull out points and toilet stops at all major beaches, but you will then have to arrange for someone to pick you up.

Besides the usual safety gear plenty of water and energy snacks should be carried and accessible.
Weather parameters will be 15K max from the North or East, but 20K from the South or West.
Skill level required is 2C minimum. (See website for details)

Plan B will be to reschedule for the 28th April but with times advanced 1 Hr. HW 9:04
