Looking after the island (www.motuora.org.nz )
  • Before you depart the mainland by boat or kayak, check your craft, camping gear and supplies for insects or rodent stowaways.  We recommend that you carry your supplies in sealed containers and that you keep poison bait stations on board any boats.
  • Clean your foot wear, clothing and camping gear and check for seeds. The Motuora Restoration Society spends thousands of dollars each year to get rid of invasive weed species.
  • Do not bring dogs or other animals to Motuora. They are a threat to protected birds (especially on the beach) and to the kiwi.
  • Do not light open fires or use candles. Fire is a real concern.
  • Smoking is permitted on the beach and in the campground only.
  • Take your rubbish off the island with you – there are no rubbish disposal facilities.
  • Pack-in - pack-out.
  • Observe the signs and stay away from shore bird nesting areas.
  • Avoid walking over newly planted areas.
  • Stores are not available on the island so it is important to bring all food and other consumables with you.
  • In emergencies there is a telephone and basic first aid kit at the Manager's office.

Please check your items before you pack, carry them in zipped up bags or sealed containers where possible, then tick the appropriate boxes below and hand this sheet to the Island Manager when you arrive at Motuora.
Items being carried Action Yes I have done this
Packs Packs need to be shaken and checked inside including the pockets.
Footwear Shoes and boots need to be mud and seed free. Check treads of the soles, laces and tongues of shoes.
Clothing Woolly socks, clothing and velcro closures can carry seeds. Please check them.
General gear and clothing Once gear is checked it should be carried in bags with a draw string or zipped up fastener.
Tents and similar Tents need to be opened up at home and given a good shake.
Bedding Sleeping bags and pillows (if not used on the beds at home) need to be checked.
Food Food should be carried in sealed containers.
Boat/kayak Check your boat/kayak.It is a good idea to keep a couple of baited traps on board at all times.
Camping Gear I suggest, dry bags for all your gear.  I personally prefer 10L dry bags, as they pack into you kayak easier than a few 30 L dry bags.  It would be best if at least your cloths & sleeping bag are in dry bags.

If you do not have any dry bags consider buying some.  Canoe & Kayak, Bivouac, Warehouse etc. all have various forms of dry bags.  Alternatively, bring your own thick black bags.

Camping Kit
  • Spare clothes for after paddling (in a dry bag).  I suggest: Thermal longs, thermal long top, Polo fleece, Beenie / woolen hat, woolen shocks, Rain gear (top & pants), shoes e.g. walking / hiking boots.  It may seem warm during the day, but it can get quite cold at night
  • Towel & swim gear
  • Tent or bivi
  • Sleeping bag in a dry bag
  • Sleeping mat
  • Insect repellent
  • Cooking equipment - mini stove, pots and pans and cutlery, matches/lighter, folding washing up bowl, dishwashing liquid, pan scrubber etc
  • Your favourite evening drink
  • Food
  • Torch  (head / other)
  • Toilet Roll
