Sea Kayak Skills Course Weekend
A unique opportunity to complete your 2 days training within a marine reserve.
Just 20 minutes from downtown Auckland, the Long bay - Okura Marine Reserve has an abundance of wildlife. Stingray, mullet and flounder are regularly seen; and many birds can be seen or heard including tui, bellbird, kereru, oyster-catcher, pied stilt, reef heron, white-faced heron, dotterel, fantail, grey warbler, kingfisher, harrier hawk, tern, and many more. The marine bioluminescence is also a must see!
Accommodation (tents) is provided for the weekend if you would like an authentic camping experience. Otherwise there is also the option of staying in the historical Dacre Cottage. Participants are also welcome to organise their own accommodation.
Your two day Sea Kayak Skills Course will give you knowledge and confidence in rescues, paddle techniques, clothing and much more.
Saturday - General Plan:
Firstly we will teach you about the easy ways of entering and exiting a kayak along with the methods of self and group rescues.
Paddle skills and rescue techniques are the main way of preventing potential problems and guaranteeing enjoyment so the day is spent giving you the skills and practise time to allow you to develop them.
Sunday - General Plan:
We head off for the day to cover the issues of paddling in open water, including weather, basic navigation, trip planning, communications, group management, safety equipment and procedures whilst having an enjoyable days outing.
