22 – 25 July 2016 Raglan Harbour with Ruth
Explore at leisure the Raglan Harbour – limestone rocks, waterfalls and narrow fingers of land on Saturday and go to the very end of the harbour, on the Sunday. And if you can…stay on for Monday too. Congregate Friday night at the Raglan Kopua Holiday Park at the ‘backpackers’ kitchen – whether staying in one of the backpacker bunkrooms, tenting or in a Tourist Flat.
Meet 9.30 at Raglan Kopua Holiday Park. Carry boats thru gap in the sand dunes, near the ‘backpackers’ cabins. On the water at 10.00 Cross harbour to Marotaka Pt to see limestone formations.
Continue up harbour past the wharf, past Lorenzen Bay towards the Narrows. Ignore the first estuary/creek entrance; go in to Okete Bay hugging the coast to find the waterfall.
On exiting head for the Narrows. Want to get there at about 12.30, explore, have lunch and depart about 1330 before the bay dries out.
Possible pit stops – a) as enter Okete Bay, past the house b) on shallow beach on right before hit the Narrows c) in Haroto Bay where the Paritata Peninsula narrows – but this can be muddy.
On exiting the Narrows head for Motukokako Pt to get in the tidal stream for a fast ride back. Do not get too close to the wharf! (20- 23 km to Okete Falls and Narrows return).
Saturday night – go out for a meal. Many restaurants to choose from.
Paddlers on the water at 10.00. Head to wharf, then head around Motukokako Pt and head to Waiwhara Bay, hugging the coast into Te Kotuku Ck. and/or Tawatahi River and/or Waingaro Landing.
Then turn around and paddle with the outward going tide back to Raglan.
Possible pit stops – a) Waiwhara Bay on left or b) along Paritata Peninsula on right. (20 – 25km return. Or 13km one way – would need to arrange a shuttle).
Raglan Kopu Holiday Park – Backpackers area. For Friday and Saturday I have booked the two ensuite (small) bunkrooms, sleep four each, $34 per person per night. Plus one standard (spacious) bunkroom sleeps eight, $30 pp. If you want to share one of these, say so on the registration form and I’ll save you a bed. Alternatively phone 07 825 8283 to book your own Tourist flat or tent site. Say you are with the Yakity Yak kayak group.
See www.raglanholidaypark.co.nz for more info.
Usual paddling and safety gear, breakfasts, snacks, lunch. Winter woolies. Sleeping bag. Hot water bottle. Thermos flask.
Plan B’s – go for a short paddle in the SW inlet (Kaitoke Ck) or drive to the Bridal Veil Falls bush walk and Waingaro Hot pools, or visit the cafes and interesting shops, or Wainui Reserve for the views & sculptures – great spot for Tai Chi or yoga, or descend to the west coast beach for a walk on the wild side.
