Northland - Tauranga Bay/Whangaroa Harbour

19th - 25th April 2017

NORTHLAND UPDATE: Please check equipment list below and ensure you have a Helmet if you intend to kayak in the caves. As part of our Safe Operation Plan you now need to wear a helmet. They can be hired (limited number available) or you can buy them from as little as $99 from Canoe & Kayak BOP.

So it's all systems go for the trip up North after Easter (19th-25th April). This time round we will be staying at Tauranga Bay instead of Whangaroa Harbour as they can accommodate all of us. It's a fantastic location on a beautiful white sandy beach, from which we can paddle directly in to Whangaroa Harbour, up to North Head and all it's caves, down the southern coastlines secluded beaches and a short drive to get to our launching site for the Cavalli Islands.
Tauranga Bay Holiday Park have been brilliant and done a flat rate for us on all their cabins at $100 per night (irrelevant of the number of people in each cabin). Cabins vary in the number of people they can take from 3 to 5. All cabins come with kitchenettes with the basics (plates, cutlery, pans etc) but there is also a communal BBQ available. They also come with a shower/ toilet each which is a real bonus and a luxury for us.
I have 6 cabins booked for us and have allocated people to the cabins so please DO NOT ring the holiday park as it is my job to organising where you are all sleeping. If you would rather camp then you may contact the Holiday Park directly to organise it yourself but please let me know if this is your intention.

Sort yourselves out for dinner although pre-dinner wine and nibbles welcome!!!

Thurs 20th April - Tauranga Bay eastern coastline
We'll take a paddle from Tauranga Bay east along the coast passed Whangaihe Bay & Karaka Island, towards East Bay before heading back. Bring your swim togs as good opportunities to go for a swim and snorkell. We'll be covering around 12-15km.

Fri 21st April - Tauranga Bay/ North Head/ Whangaroa Harbour

AM /PM  On the water by 9:30am. Kayak from Tauranga Holiday Park we'll head North across the Whangaroa harbour entrance and across to a piece of coastline known as North Head (towards Taupo Bay) to explore the caves and cliffs. We'll then head back down the coast in to Whangaroa Harbour and explore some of it's shores with a stop for lunch and perhaps a quick coffee at the Kingfisher Lodge. So make sure you've got some change. We'll then paddle back to the Tauranga Bay. We'll cover around 15-18km.

Dinner BBQ.- bring something along.

Sat 22nd April - Cavalli Islands

AM/PM Load the trailer at 8am. Jump in our vehicles and head around the coast to Matauri Bay. From here we'll paddle out across the Cavalli Passage to the Cavalli Islands, which lie 3km off the mainland. The Cavallis is a small group of private islands and reserves, the largest being 'Motukawanui Island' where we'll stop for lunch. We'll explore the island a bit before heading back to Matauri Bay on the mainland. We'll travel around 20km, depending on the state of the sea around the islands, otherwise we'll stick the the western side of the islands to avoid the swell.

Dinner - sort yourselves out or eat out at one of the local restaurants - There is a good choice of restaurants all within a short drive from Tauranga Bay - including Janits Texas Diner (juicy steaks!) in Kaeo, Lukes Diner at the Marlin Hotel in Whangaroa Harbour (mouth-watering seafood and other meals) and the Whangaroa Big Game Fishing Club (a delicious menu and you can dine right over the water on the Club's deck).

This trip is suitable for confident beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. However, you can do as much or as little kayaking as you like so if you want to miss a day and go swimming, walking or just lazing on the beach instead then that is possible.
The planned trips each day are very weather dependent so may change according to the conditions. If for any reason it is not safe to kayak on the sea then there are plenty of other things to do in the area instead.

All attendees need to be current club members and have completed a 2 day sea kayak skills course with Canoe & Kayak. Contact Estelle for any queries 0220918605 / bopyakityyakkayakclub@gmail.com
