Yakity Yak Kayak Club
We are a friendly bunch of people who are always heading out on exciting paddling adventures, exploring this beautiful country of ours.
We cater for all levels of experience from beginners to advanced. You don’t need your own kayak as you can hire one from us if you choose.
To join the club you must have a suitable level of skills. The best way to achieve this is to complete a Canoe & Kayak Sea Kayak Skills Course. This covers paddle and rescue techniques, as well as theory on topics such as trip planning, equipment, weather etc. The course is suitable for complete beginners, but if you already have some skills, we will take those to the next level.
If you are not yet a club member but are keen to get involved just call in to the C&K shop at 502 Sandringham Rd Auckland, or phone us on 09 815 2073 and have a chat.

Tips n' Tricks
Beginners Trips - there are trips suitable for beginners in conjunction with C&K's Sea Kayak Skills Course. This is an ideal way for new paddlers to gain experience and fitness while under the watchful eye of experienced instructors.
Intermediate & Advanced trips - these trips run throughout the year and include destinations such as Tiritiri Matangi, Lake Waikaremoana, Motuihe, circumnaviation of Rangitoto, and anywhere else you would like to go. We even have an annual trip overseas!
Evening Paddles during the summer months. Meeting after work, we have dinner on a beach somewhere, often returning at dusk.
Surfing at Orewa during the summer months. We take a trailer load of sit-on-tops, white-water kayaks and sea kayaks, and go and play for a couple of hours. This is great fun and a great way to improve your skills. If you haven't done this before we will show you how.
Intermediate Skills Courses include Weather, Navigation, Paddle Skills, Rescues & Towing.
Practice Nights - In conjunction with courses on the Tuesday night at the pool you may come along to practice your Eskimo Rolling, rescues, or anything else you wish. This will cost you just $15 per session which includes the pool entry fee (payable to Russell). Let us know you are coming to ensure that we have enough gear.
Club Night - this is held at the shop on the second Wednesday of every month. Come along and meet your fellow clubbies, have a wine or beer, and plan our upcoming trips. We frequently have a speaker or demonstrate new products - we always have a laugh.
Leader's Course - every year we run a Leader's Course for those who are keen to be involved.
Canoe & Kayak Auckland, operated by Larraine & Russell, combines training, a club, and a retail/rental outlet. Their priorities are obviously in that order. Safety, competence, a good experience, and the reputation of the business all come before sales figures. When purchasing, they provided sound, unbiased advice and plentiful opportunities to evaluate products before buying.
I've completed a number of training courses and each has been excellent. Instructors are well-qualified and sensitive to each person's ability and concerns. They make you comfortable first, and then competent. The training is broken into small steps and then brought together, starting in a swimming pool or with theoretical teaching, and graduating to ocean conditions and practical exercises.
The club gives opportunities to extend my ability and fitness; visit new places or see well-known ones from a different angle; and make new friends. Every outing is planned around safety and the skill level of participants. Learnings from all activities are fed back into the processes and training in quality control that is integral to the operation.
Communication is always clear and reliable, and is enhanced by attention to detail both on the water and on the web-site.
I can recommend Canoe & Kayak Auckland for service, product range, business ethics, and excellent teamwork.
This was my first year sea kayaking, and what a great year it's been. I've discovered a passion for a new endeavour that satisfies, and challenges across a whole range of areas. The Yakity Yak Kayak Club has provided an opportunity for me to get involved with this great sport in an extremely safety conscious environment, and to see a lot of awesome natural areas of NZ I wouldn't have otherwise got to.
The Yakity Yak clubs have more group trips both day trips and multi-day trips than any other group in Auckland. Plus they are not competitive and cater for all skill levels. Everyone is there just to have a good time. If you like sea kayaking and the comfort and safety of paddling in a group you should join.
The course is very well organized and good value for money and worthwhile. I would recommend it to anyone considering kayaking - you don't know what you don't know until exposed to this course.
I've taken many courses on all sorts of things but this is simply the best! Such a clear and positive approach to all aspects of learning to kayak, with excellent instructors.
Loved the course! Well taught and gives me the confidence to get out there and enjoy myself.
