About Us

Welcome to the unique Yakity Yak Kayak Club. If you're reading this then you've already made the first step to taking your kayaking interest further, whether you've already kayaked before or an absolute beginner, our kayak club is a friendly place to learn to kayak, develop your skills at your pace and really discover some amazing kayaking destinations in New Zealand that you probably didn't know existed or wouldn't paddle on your own.

The Yakity Yak Kayak Club is unique as it's a network of kayak clubs around New Zealand. Established in 1992 the club has taught and taken hundreds of people kayaking and today it still has over 600 members. This gives you the opportunity to access trips being run all across the country and meet some amazing people. The club is a not-for-profit trust and is run by dedicated and passionate volunteers who want to encourage others to experience the pleasure of kayaking.

Our club has many opportunities to get you out on the water, whatever you fancy and whatever your level of ability. We have members with sit-on tops, fishing kayaks, sea kayaks, white water kayaks, canoes and multisport kayaks. Essentially it's your choice as to which side of kayaking interests you and which trips you'd like to go on. All we ask is that you complete an appropriate Kayaking Skills Course with Canoe & Kayak first, so that you have the foundation skills required for you to be safe on the water. This is as much for the safety others as well as yourself. These courses will also give you the confidence to do more than you expected and perhaps do trips you wouldn't have considered before, safe in the knowledge you are surrounded by like-minded, experienced, supportive people and trained leaders and instructors.

We have members from 14yrs - 80+yrs so no matter what your age or ability, we guarantee you'll find trips to suit you. Membership is just $75 a year, $115 for couples & families. With your membership you get a year's subscription to the NZ Kayak Magazine and club discounts on selected products at Canoe & Kayak. There is also the ability to further your skills with other courses run through Canoe & Kayak and through leader training.
There is a discount on your initial skills course fees when you sign up for club membership. You don't need to have a kayak of your own to join the club, there are a range of kayaks and equipment you can
hire at heavily discounted member rates from Canoe & Kayak, which will help you decide what suits you before buying your own.
