Kaipara Harbour

Martin made his holiday home available to sixteen clubbies for a wonderful weekend.  Saturday morning we headed down the estuary with an outgoing tide and moderate headwind.  We had a couple of stops before going through The Funnel which is where a large volume of water squeezes through a narrow gap.  We had an extended lunch stop at Tinopai which allowed time for a variety of activities including fishing, and a walk to a dairy that had fireworks but no ice-creams!
Back on the water we broke into 2 groups, with 7 adventurers heading out into the middle of the channel to make the most of the incoming tide, wind on our backs and following sea.  It was good fun and Paul's GPS clocked us at over 13km/hour.
We had a yummy shared dinner that night, though we had to make do with sausages as the  fish which weren't biting at all.
Next morning we headed up the estuary and had a leisurely morning exploring among the mangroves.
What struck me most about the Kaipara is how wonderfully uninhabited it is.  The loudest sound was birdsong.  There were few other vessels on the water with just the occasional fishing boat out.
Thanks Martin for your hospitality, and your leadership on the water.
