CAMP - Orongo Holiday Park, Russell.

It's a long weekend so time to go camping. Orongo Holiday Park is a fully equipped camping ground with with every option from tenting to self contatined units. We recommend lodge/bunk rooms as ideal for beginner kayakers.

We will be cabin camping so less camping gear is required and we will be snug in the evenings. We share nibbles before dinner but on Saturday night we will have a shared meal. so bring something to contribute to these but other wise you are self catering.

Orongo is on a peninsular so there will be trips on either side (dependent on winds of course). Beginners have shorter trips available (15-18 km)  to help build your paddle fitness.

Trips that can be taken if staying at Orongo Holiday Park:

---- 14km – Tourist trail – Russel, Waitangi, Pahia
---- 18 km – Russell Boating Cub to Black Rocks return via Waitang
---- 18km – Oneroa (Long) Bay to Manawaroa Bay return
---- 23.5km – Oneroa Bay to Motuarohia (Roberton), Moturua, Motukeikei Islands
---- 39km - Oneroa Bay to Motuarohia (Roberton), Moturua, Motukeikei, Okahu and Waewaetorea Islands

Orongo Holiday Park is a lovely venue for a camp. It has a full range of camp sites and cabins, so there is something to suit everyones tastes. There is a large clean kitchen with a great dining/loung area with stocked fire place and library (if you have time). There are weka running around in the day and kiwi at night. A great opportunity for bird watchers. While the camp is not directly on the beach it is a short drive to two good launch points, either Russell Boating Club or Oneroa Bay. The Kororareka (Russell) Inlet is very sheltered and offers placid paddles for beginners. Conversely, for the experienced paddler, very exciting rock gardening can be available on the Pacific side of the coastlines of the mainland and the islands depending on wind directions and strength.

Pre-dinner nibble to share each night
Something for the shared Sat night dinner
A glow stick or night light for an evening paddle
