RANGITOTO Is CIRCUMNAVIGATION

RANGITOTO ISLAND CIRCUMNAVIGATION

Date Changed to Saturday the 15th June due to weather                           HW 1235

Well we haven’t done this trip for a while so its time to join Richard Saysell and reacquaint yourself with it; or do, for the first time, this iconic trip. This is also a great trip for when you are willing to venture past the new beginner stage.

This will be a “through the gap” (Gardiner’s) trip either clockwise or anti clockwise, depending on the weather on the day, leaving from Narrow neck  (the shortest distance) Total trip length is 24K, so around 4 hrs paddling broken into 4 stages with stops at McKenzie bay, Gardiner’s gap for lunch, and Rangi Wharf (or in reverse).

Meeting time at Narrow neck 09:30, on the water at 10:00.

We should be back by 3:30.

Remember this is a winter trip so lots of thermals, warm hat and gloves and spare dry thermals in a dry bag are a must, Also, as we will be crossing the main shipping channel twice, HI Vis flags and / or hats are also essential.

Other than that, normal Kayaking safety gear, warm drinks and lunch are the order of the day.

Skill level required is 2B; it can get quite choppy with swells when crossing the channel.

There are toilets at all the stopping points; and other beaches on Rangi and on the North Shore can be used for emergency pullouts. Parking at Narrow Neck is normally not an issue.

Weather parameters will be 15 Knots max.

Plan B can be a Coastal paddle either from Narrow neck or, with a short drive round North Head, in the harbour from Devonport (Dudders Beach).
