General Plan Let’s trial the trail – the recently opened Te Ara Moana along Auckland’s south eastern coast – and instead of taking four days to go one-way, take four days to go both ways in the next School Holidays. If you are not a teacher, book a couple of days leave…
Day One: Meet at Omana Regional Park camping ground Friday night /or Sat morning on the foreshore. Saturday - On The Water 9.00 paddle via Duder R P (11km) rest/explore one hr, on to Waitawa R P (14km). Camp overnight at Waitawa campground (cooking shelter). Portage 30m.
Day Two: OTW 8.00 paddle on via Kawakawa (maybe stop for an ice-cream) to Tawhitokino RP (10km ), rest/explore one hr, paddle on to Tapapakanga RP (8km) rest/explore one hr, onto Waharau RP (8km). Camp overnight at Tainui campground (shower & kitchen). Portage 500m.
Day Three: OTW 8.00 Paddle back to Waitawa RP (26km)
Day Four: OTW 8.00 Paddle back to Omana (24km) Camp or drive home.

Distance Sat 25km. Sun 26km. Mon 26km. Tues 25km.
Minimum Ability level  
Paddle fit Intermediate – able to paddle in 15-20 knots for two hours or for 10 kms without rest.
Tide Low Sat 16.30 0.7; Sun 17.15; Mon1800; Tues 1900  (0.7 – 0.8m) High Sat 1040; Sun 1120; Mon 1200; Tues 1300 (3.0 – 2.9m) NB these are Auck times. The Firth of Thames is at least 30 mins earlier i.e.  Omana is minus 20 mins on the Auck time.
Weather Parameters Less than 20 knots headwind.
Communications We will be communicating as a group on VHF Channel 6, VHF Channel 16 for emergency and 80 or 82 Coastguard trip reports.
Facilities /Car Parking At Omana Regional Park (or other Parks enroute except Tawhitokino, if joining us for a day paddle).
Book own camping 09 301 0101 – can buy an annual AC pass for about $60
Equipment Wheels. All usual winter kayaking, Hi Vis and safety gear; all usual winter camping gear and extra spare warm clothing. Remember head torch, tarp, beanie and gloves.
Emergency Exit Points Along coast.
Additional Risk Factors Power and sail boat traffic, fishermen’s lines, cold weather.
