Otaki Kayaking and Camping Expo

‘The Wellington Yakity Yak Club Kayak and Camping Expo’
11th-13th March 2016

We will be doing a weekend away to the Byron’s Resort camp ground in Otaki. This is going to be a good one for people who are thinking of getting into doing overnight kayaking and camping trips. There will be people there who are already experienced in doing this sort of thing and will have their gear at the camp ground for others to have a look at. This will include kayaks, paddles, buoyancy aids, tents, cookers, sleeping mats etc. Basically all the gear you will need on an overnight trip. What type of food to take on trips is always a question we get asked a lot and is another topic we can talk about over the weekend. It will be a good opportunity for club members, new and old, to see what people are using and talk with them as to why they got the gear they did.

The camp ground has many forms of accommodation from Tent Sites to Pool Side Villas and it will be up to you to book your own. So even if you don’t have any camping gear you can still come up and stay. Click here to go to the website. We have an area set aside for us. When you call them to book your form of accommodation tell them you are with the ‘Canoe and Kayak’ group.

The length of time you come up for is up to you. I will be going up on Friday afternoon and coming back Sunday sometime. You may wish to do the same or other options are come up Saturday and spend the night or just come up for the day on Saturday. The choice is yours. Your food and beverages are up to you to organise. If tenting you will need your plates, knives, forks, cups etc.  Even if you aren’t going to use your cooker up there it would be good if you could take it so others can see what you use.

We will be getting out on the water so bring your kayak. If you don’t have one then you can hire one at the special rate of $70 for two days (including transport). We will go out and either play in the surf (if any) or do a paddle along the coast line (or both) depending on the conditions. We will get out on the water Sat and Sun.

This will be a great weekend away and a chance to meet and socialise with other clubbies as well as pick up good tips on gear and food for trips. We have a lot of new people to the club so it would be great to see you all there. This is also open to partners who aren’t members of the club.

If you plan on being there over the weekend please contact the shop and let us know how long you are going to be there for and also whether you need to hire a kayak.
Remember to book your own accommodation.
