Cavalli Island Adventure

Cavalli Islands Adventure (Friday 15th – Sunday 17th December)

The Cavalli Islands lie off the coast of Matauri Bay, about 30km north of Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands. The main island, Motukawanui, is a nature reserve with a walking track. We will be paddling around and amongst the islands exploring.

On the seafloor between the Cavalli Islands and Matauri Bay lies the Rainbow Warrior, the famous Greenpeace vessel. The ship was involved in protests against the French government, which was undertaking nuclear tests in French Polynesia during 1985. The Rainbow Warrior was sunk by the French intelligence service while at anchor in New Zealand that same year, causing national outrage.

The ship was scuttled here in 1987 to become a dive attraction. Today the wreck is a complex eco system covered in corals and sea anemones.

For our Yakity Yak kayaking adventure we will be based at Matauri Bay Holiday camp, using this as a place to explore from each day.  We will paddle out to various sections of the islands as our group plans where we would like to go each day.  You can choose how much paddling you wish to participate in or just to relax at times.

- Friday afternoon paddle

- Saturday full day paddle

- Sunday morning paddle

You will need to bring all your own camping and kayaking gear. Various options for camping are available at the holiday park.
