Matauri Bay and Cavalli Islands, Easter,
Friday 10th April to Monday 13th April
Apparently there is an error in the below information. So for now register for the trip but don't book your accommodation until further notice - hopefully later today (Thur 12).
Leader is Ian Cheeseman
Meet at Matauri Bay campground evening of Thursday 9th April or Friday morning 10th April
We will organize trips each morning depending on weather and available trip leaders with the aim of covering various distances.
YOU WILL NEED TO BOOK A CAMPSITE AT THE MATAURI BAY HOLIDAY PARK (Ph: 09 405 0525 and as it is Easter the campground will likely be full.
http://www.matauribayholidaypark.co.nz/ Please make your own bookings - first night at Matauri Bay Holiday Park. Subsequent nights book a space at the cabin on Motukawanui Island, see below.
Suitable for intermediate paddlers. The distances are not great, but the conditions can be challenging if there is even the smallest of swells. You must take your helmet if you are intending getting anywhere near the rocks - and if you aren't there is not much point in going! Helmets can be hired from C&K if you don't have your own. Matauri Bay is also a surf beach, though if the surf is too big on the main beach we can go around the corner where it is more protected and probably a bit flatter (though rockier).
The Cavalli Islands are one of New Zealand's premier sea kayaking destinations with a number of small islands scattered in the area and plenty of places to explore. There is wonderful rock gardening with a multitude of caves and tunnels in the area. There are also some walking tracks. The islands are full of kiwi and other protected species.
Mention Yakity Yak when you make your booking at Matauri Bay and choose a campsite number in the 40’s and 50’s and the group should be reasonably close together.
Motukawanui Island DOC hut - limited numbers, sleeps 12 in two bunks (its cosy!), no tenting, no fires, please book on DOC website here...
You will need to take all your food and means to cook it. Earplugs recommended in case of snorers.
If you need to hire a kayak, please contact Greg at auckland@canoeandkayak.co.nz. The trailer is not going but there may be the possibility of a kayak being transported for you, depending on who else is going.
