Queen's Birthday weekend, 1-3 June. Leader is Alistair
UPDATE 30 May -
It looks as though we have about 20 people coming of mixed experience - should be a great weekend!
A couple of points were raised at the trip meeting last night.
1. There is plenty of room at the camp ground and you don't really need to book -
however, a swipe key is needed to get into the facilities, so if you are arriving 'late' (time not specified - maybe after dark?) you need to let the camp know you are coming so that they can leave a swipe key in the letter box for you.
2. There is a camp shop onsite with basic supplies only. There appears to be a licensed cafe in the area, but I can't find any local takeaway place. So you need to be fully self-catered.
3. There is a kitchen with room to eat inside, and apparently the facilities are all very nice.
4. The weather forecast is looking great with variable 10 knots, starting to rise to 15 knots towards the end of the weekend. Few showers. There is little swell forecast so plenty of rock gardening for all. And it should be warmer up there but still take your woolies.
The plan is to stay at Matauri Bay Holiday Park each night, as they have hot showers and this will provide some protection for our cars. http://www.matauribayholidaypark.co.nz/
Suitable for all levels of paddler. Cavalli Islands are only 3km offshore so we will head out there (weather permitting), there is great rock gardening in the area, possibly some surfing, snorkeling, fishing etc.
Please make your own booking with the holiday park, but mention you are part of the Yakity Yak kayaking group so that they can locate us in a bunch and close to the water. Most will be heading up on Friday 31 May.
The reason for doing this trip in winter is last time Alistair went in summer and it was just unbearably hot, with marsh mellows melting…
Shared dinner on Saturday evening - take your own meat, plus something to share (salad or dessert etc).
There is an excellent surf beach on one side, so if you are planning on surfing, take your helmet. Note that if the surf is up on the main beach, the other beach faces a different direction and should be sheltered for those of you who are unused to surf landings.
Getting there -
Head north on SH1, turn right onto SH10, turn right onto Matauri Bay Rd, turn right to stay on Matauri Bay Rd, continue onto
Tapui Rd.
Approx four hours drive from Auckland city.
Equipment
Kayak and usual safety gear.
Camping gear, and any extra comforts from home you are prepared to leave in your car during the day.
The snorkeling and diving in the area is meant to be good.
Take helmets if you want to surf - there are rocks so watch out for these.
There will be at least one PLB on the trip. If you have one, please take it with you.
Additional Hazards
This is a remote location so if anything goes wrong a rescue or evacuation is a long way off.
While exploring the islands the VHF signal is often poor.
The cellphone reception at Matauri Bay is limited.
We will have a pre-trip meeting on Wednesday 29 May, 7pm at the shop.
