Hahei Rock Gardening

Hot Water Beach-hahei IMG 1307 1-962

Sunday 6th March

Latest Update 5/3/2016: This trip will be going ahead but please be advised that there will be a NE 0.5m swell with wave heights of just under 1m rolling in to Hot Water Beach. 5-10 knot northerly winds are expected. Low Tide is at 11:20am which will mean it's an incoming tide by the time we come back which may build the waves up a bit too.I recommend confident beginner paddlers+ only as you will need to beach land at Hot Water Beach on the way back. However, you'll be by your car and can get changed quickly if you get wet. Besides, you've got to practice your beach landings at some point and it's going to be a hot day so why not!We will be there to support you and guide you on to the beach as successfully as possible (but don't be scared, I do have a plan B if necessary).

Upon arriving at Hot Water Beach please do not unload your kayak until the van/trailer has arrived. I will do a visual upon arrival and if really necessary go to plan B.

Plan B: If upon visual inspection, the waves are too big for many at Hot Water Beach we will drive 15 minutes north to Hahei and launch from there where it is more sheltered from the swell and paddle south to explore the caves before returning to Hahei beach for lunch, and then either paddle to Cathedral Cove or explore the Mahurangi Islands.
Any concerns please call Estelle 0220918605.

One of the most beautiful and interesting sections of coastline in New Zealand, with, caves, archway, blowholes and more to explore.
We'll be paddling from Hot Water Beach, heading north along the coastline, taking our time to explore all the caves. We'll land at Hahei beach for lunch and for those keen to do a little more distance, you have the opportunity to paddle out to Mahurangi Island to explore. We'll then meet up back up with the others on Hahei beach before heading back south in a more direct route to Hot Water Beach.

The shorter paddle will cover about 13km, the longer paddle will cover about 18km - you choose or see how you feel on the day.

Bring your togs and a packed lunch, although you can get an ice-cream in Hahei and Hot Water Beach.

Van & trailer will be going (space on a first come first serve basis). Meet at shop at 7am or at Hot Water beach at 10am.
Off the water by 4:30pm.

NB: This trip will only run if there is little swell otherwise you cannot explore all the caves and cliff features easily.

Suitable for confident beginners with and adventurous attitude. 'Rock Gardening' as we call it, is very exciting and there's nothing like exploring caves from your kayak. You will be guided as to which caves are suitable for beginners to explore.
You will need to be comfortable beach landing at Hot Water Beach at the end (hopefully with very little swell).

Estelle will be leading this trip, please let her know if you wish to join the trip 0220918605 / bopyakityyakkayakclub@gmail.com and if you want a lift in the van.
