Surfing

Written by Andrea - chairman of the first Surfing Assessment Panel (SAP)  [editor - otherwise known as the Critical Fence Sitters]

Some very exciting new developments are happening with one of the club activities. As you know, in summer we have the surfing practice up at Orewa beach for anyone who can make it.

There is a new and great opportunity to get involved with that event. Either going surfing (which would be the obvious activity) or alternatively, to become a SAP and assess the performance of the kayakers who are on the water surfing. It all would depend on your calling on that day. No explanation necessary why you might not be on the water and want to choose to be a SAP. This panel has been formed for the first time by Chris, Denise and Andrea at the first surfing session of this summer. May I take the opportunity here to thank my fellow SAPs? It was a great honour to be on the panel with you both.

However, let me make something very clear for you first. Being part of this panel is a big responsibility and requires an ability to be able to do a good assessment of the abilities of the surfers on the day. You would assess people’s skills and ability against categories which I will outline shortly. You might choose to stay within those outlined categories or add to them or drop some, depending on how the surf rolls in that day.   Then the panel will together choose the winner of each category and announce them at the next club night. Needless to say, the members of the panel might keep changing depending how people feel on that day.

Outlining the 6 categories that have been identified at the first surfing session.

1)      Most entertaining surfer of the day

In this category the panel will look for the person who keeps them interested in them throughout the whole time they are on the water. They might keep catching some amazing rides or have some outstanding spectacular capsizes or anything between.  The person who is chosen by the panel in this category can truly be proud of their entertainment and wear their medal with pride.

The first person winning this category was Shaun for his stylish up-side-down surfing -  Well done Shaun. It was a pleasure watching you on the water.

2)      Most hesitant looking on the water - the winner of that category was most surprisingly Tim (well, he was in his tippy kayak)

3)      Capsizing and rolling up without getting out of the kayak - Nobody came even remotely close to the outstanding performance demonstrated by Lance - truly impressive performance Lance.

4)      Bravest - There were two people who came to the surf session for the first time and they both gave it a real good go in their sea kayaks without any previous experience.   Alex and Aaron - well done to the both of you.

5)      Most reluctant to come off the water  - There was one person who had to be dragged off the water as he just wanted to keep going. Clearly oblivious that everybody had already packed up and ready to go to have dinner.  Winner in this category was Vaughan.

6)      Who had the most fun  - Well in that category we had the most difficulty in deciding the winner. The panel then came to their final decision that the winner clearly has to be -  everyone!

Well done everyone who was on the water.  So the big question now is, who will be brave enough to be on the next panel?
