Tiritiri Matangi

Sunday 20 September. Leader is Russ

Meet at Army Bay, 9am for 9.30am departure.

Two options - paddle around the island, or go for a walk on the island (possibly both), or sleep on the beach.   Total distance of about 24 km to circumnavigate.

Bring your lunch, and water as there is none on the parts of the island we stop at. There is a long drop toilet at Hobbs Beach.

The channel crossing is about 4km each way and it can get choppy and windy, so this trip is suitable for strong and confident beginners if the wind is below 15 knots.  There is awesome rock gardening including a cave around the other side - we advise that you take your helmet if you intend going anywhere near the rocks.

Tiri is a gem; it is an open sanctuary and you can see saddlebacks, robins, bellbirds, tui, kokako, and takahe and other endangered species.  More information on Tiri is here...

Equipment - normal kayaking gear, and make sure you are visible (flag, hi-viz gear etc) as we cross a channel that can be busy.

Note that Tiri is pest free – please check your boat and gear for rats, mice, Argentine ants, Rainbow skinks, soil and seeds.
