Treasure Islands

This is a joint initiative between the Department of Conservation and Auckland Council to protect conservation islands in the Hauraki Gulf. We are very privileged to live in such close proximity to so many islands which are pest free and being replanted with native vegetation to provide a safe habitat for many of our native species.

Pest Free Warrant

To help protect the pest-free islands of the Hauraki Gulf, DOC and the Auckland Council have set up a bio-security warrant system.

We at Canoe & Kayak and Yakity Yak Kayak Club take our responsibilities seriously and have been approved as a Pest Free Operator.

You can do your bit -

  • Store your kayak with hatch covers and cockpit cover on.
  • Prepare for your trip by being alert for stowaways such as Argentine ants, rainbow skinks, soil and seeds, mice or rats.
  • Check that your kayak and gear is clean and free of stowaways.
  • Make sure all food is packed and sealed in plastic rodent proof containers with lid.
  • Thoroughly check any camping or overnight gear for stowaways.  Gear that has been stored is high risk.

Rats, mice, insect pests and the invasive rainbow skink could hide in your bag.
Weed seeds cling to clothing and shoes. Soil on shoes, tent pegs, or gear may carry unwanted plant diseases.
