No camping required

A great trip for those new to kayaking and those that enjoy getting away for a great weekend.

We will limit this to 10 paddlers but would go with a minimum of six. Non paddling partners could come if there are any beds left. Jen has booked 10 beds at Haka Lodge, but she needs definite commitment to the trip by Thursday 10th May.

Transport will be by private car, but depending on whether people have their own kayaks or not and have the means to transport them or not we could hire Canoe and Kayak's trailer if necessary.

If you don't have a Kayak please contact Canoe and Kayak and arrange to rent one a soon as possible or alternatively post a request on the Facebook page to see if another member could lend you their kayak for the trip.

Trip outline
The general trip outline will be to travel to Taupo on the Saturday morning and then paddle to the Maori rock carvings in the afternoon. We will go out for dinner that night at a local restaurant.

Sunday we will go out to the launching spot on the Waikato River and paddle down into Lake Ohakuri and Orakeikorako thermal area and then onto Paradise Hot Springs that are located on the lake (the keen ones can take a dip). Another option is going to the 'sqeeze' and making our way up to a tepid waterfall.
This is an amazing area that allows you to paddle right next to bubbling thermal vents and feel your kayak warm up in the tepid waters (it’s all right they won’t melt). The river in this area is very slow moving and you hardly notice you are actually paddling in any sort of current, so very safe. That night we will do a shared roast meal in the communal kitchen at the lodge. Always a very social evening.

Taupo 3

Monday we will start to make our way back to Wellington with a paddle detour out to a small island on Lake Taupo called Motutaiko. This is a stunning paddle on a nice day. If the weather isn’t playing ball we can find a sheltered area on the southern end of the lake to kayak or take a dip in a local hot pool. Plenty of options for us. We will be back in Wellington around 6pm
