Another Christmas Escape

Christmas morning dawned bright and clear and after a quick phone call to those who had expressed interest in escaping the craziness, we were off. Cathy gently carried her brand new boat to the water but didn't want to put her sandy feet inside. We decided that it wasn't going to work if she swam and towed it behind, so she reluctantly got it dirty for the first time. We launched at Hatfield's Beach and headed north. We passed Wenderholm which looked a bit crowded and went on to Te Muri Beach which has no road access, so apart from a couple of tents housing a young family, the place was completely deserted.
We spread out our picnic under a tree and feasted on ham and salad and a glass of wine, followed by wonderful whiskey laced mince tarts imported from Scotland (thanks Dougie!) and chocolates (slightly melted). We lay back in the sun and listened to the pure sounds of nature without the background noise of humanity.
Our post-lunch walk was a rock-hop around the coast with flowering pohutakawas clinging to the cliffs. We got back into our boats and slowly ambled our way back down the coast investigating some caves and marvelling at this wonderful country we live in. I hope you all had a day as wonderful as ours.
