Henderson Creek

Saturday 7 December.  Leader is Tim

  • Limited numbers so book early
  • Meet at 10:00 AM at Waitemata Rowing Club in Te Atatu Penisula;
  • 0n the water 10:30 AM
  • Do some exploring on the river – check out Ecology of Henderson Creek for some fascinating bio diversity information about the creek
  • Have lunch / drinks at Fall Restaurant
  • Head back with the outgoing tide back to launch point
Suitable for strong beginners - distance is about 15km total, and should be sheltered.  We will be moving with the tide in both directions.

Getting to Taipari Strand, Te Atatu Peninsula (meeting point)
Take the North Western Motorway, SH16 and exit at Te Atatu, and head north on Te Atatu Rd towards Te Atatu Penisula . Take the left on the second roundabout to Taikata road. Drive all the way to end of Taikata road until you see the river / Waitemata Rowing Club.

Tim’s additional Notes
  • The plan is to first head up Henderson Creek to the fork in the river and then head up Swanson Creek past the new Lincoln Road off-ramp construction and head SW towards Don Buck Road
  • Should be able to go as far as foot bridge & turn around [11:00AM]
  • Head back to Henderson Creek fork [11:15AM]
  • Go up the main creek towards Henderson under the motorway and along the Central Park Drive. Reach Falls Park [11:50AM]
  • Lunch booking: 12:00 – Back in the water latest time 1:15PM
  • Paddle back with outgoing tide – back at start point by 2:00 PM

The car park is used by fishermen, the Multisport Club and the Rowing Club – but there are no club fixtures that weekend nor any time trials in the water that I am aware of – so it should go smoothly.

Equipment - standard paddle gear / Money (for pub!) / change of clothes in a dry bag, booties, drinking water & snacks and a whistle.

Additional Hazards -
Biggest risk is getting stuck in the mud if we miss the tide - keep an eye on the time
Getting separated while exploring if the group is large - ensure good supervision/tail end Charlie
