Auckland Anniversary weekend 28 Jan to 30 Jan, though probably extended either end for those who can get away for longer.
Leader is Nick
Details still to be confirmed.
Drive to Mimiwhangata Coastal Park and then paddle to Waikahoa Camp Ground (approx 10 min paddle, and if the weather is not good you can get there by a 15 minute hike over the hill). Set up camp and then over the next few days explore the Mimiwhangata Coastal Park and Whangamumu Harbour environs. This is a beautiful area with lots of rock gardening.
Getting there - drive through Whangarei to Hikurangi, ten minutes out of Hikurangi going north take the turning to Oakura on the right. Approx 2-3 kms o the right take Pigshead Road, then the same distance again on the left take Kaikanui Rd; follow through until the road forks, approx 10 kms, go right onto Mimiwhangata Rd. From here it is all downhill to the coastal park approx 5 more kms. Prom Pigshead Rioad the roads are all dirt and narrow.
Another option - from Whangarei, turn off SH1 onto Russell Rd. At Helena Bay turn sounth onto Webb Rd, continue until you come to the Mimiwhangata Coastal Park, turn off.
Once there, the Park Rangers house is on the small hill to the left and is the first house that you come to. The track forks to it. Introduce yourself to him, pay your fees and he will then give you the combination to the lock on the gate and give you final directions to the Waikahoa Campsite. Car parking will be on Mimiwhangata DOC land.
Load your kayaks and get on the water. When leaving the beach there is a small headland at far left end of the beach (looking seawards), paddle around this headland staying close to shore, as the camp ground is on the other side and the bay is quite small. If you decide to walk, go up and over the headland and straight down and into the campsite.
