Coromandel

26th / 27th /28th October - Labour Weekend
Coromandel Islands to explore
Join Estelle for 3 days of paddling bliss exploring this stunning area that has so many interesting places to paddle. There are some stunning islands, shores and estuaries to discover and the potential to cover both the West and East coast of the peninsular depending on the weather. Definitely bring a fishing rod as the are plenty of opportunities to catch some dinner.
You're welcome to just join us for 1,2 or all 3 days, whatever is convenient , just let us know your intentions so we can tell you where to meet and what time. These trips are suitable for confident beginners who have reasonable fitness. You may choose to skip a day if you're tired and do an alternative activity like walking. There's loads to do in the area.

We'll be based in the Coromandel township, either staying at the Long Bay campsite & cabins (07 866 8720 quote Canoe & Kayak) or at one of the lodges if people would rather not camp, you'll need to organise your own accommodation but please let Estelle know where you're staying. Long Bay cabins are already full for this weekend and all other powered an un-powered sites are filling up quickly.

The Plan (depending on the weather):

Day 1: Sat 26th Oct - Meet at shop at 7am, load van & trailer and depart by 7:30am. Arrive at the Long Bay motor camp at 10am.Set up camp / tents etc.
Ready to launch kayaks from Long Bay at 11am. Paddle from Long Bay along the coast and out to Whanganui Island where we'll stop for lunch on one of the beaches. We'll then paddle out to Motutapere Island and circumnavigate it before heading back along the coast to Long Bay. Covering about 12km-15km, back by 4pm. Go for a quick dusk kayak fishing trip, if there are any takers, and catch something for dinner. Enjoy an evening camp with a social Pot Luck dinner and drinks -bring a dish and a chair if you have one.

Day 2: Sunday 27th Oct - Breakfast at 8am. On the water at 9:30am.
Paddle from Long Bay heading north along the coast to Ngohitanu Bay for lunch and then either across to Motuoruhi Island & Waimate Island or up to Moturua Island & Ngamotukaraka Islands and then back to Long Bay. We'll be covering around 20km and aim to be back by 4:30pm.
Go out to dinner in Coromandel town at the Top Pub (Coromandel Hotel) at 7pm.
Whangapoua Coast
Day 3: Monday 28th Oct -  Breakfast at 8am. Pack up camping gear and kayaks and leave the campsite at 9:30am and head over to Whangapoua on the east coast about 20 minutes from Coromandel township. Meet at the northern end of Whangapoua at the end of Mangakahia Drive where there is ample parking on the grass next to the Pungapunga River. Meet at 10am, on the water for 10:30am.
From here we'll paddle north across the native bush clad Wainuiototo Bay to Motukopu Island round the interesting coast in to Kennedy Bay where we'll stop on one of the sheltered, secluded beaches for lunch, perhaps go for a swim before heading back. We'll be covering about 12-15km back at Whangapoua by 3:30pm. Load trailer / van.
From here we'll drive back to Tauranga via Coromandel and Thames, which is the quickest route and pick up some Fish and Chips for dinner . ETA 7pm.

Trip plans may vary according to the weather conditions. Plan B if any day we can't get out on the water is to go walking or visit a local attraction like Driving Creek Railway & Potteries. There's loads of options.  Contact Estelle 0220918605 for updated info, hopefully there's signal at the camp site.
