Latest update: 12/12/2015 - sadly the forecast is against us for this one, with 20 knot winds forecast so this trip has been cancelled.
Sunday 13th December
A popular location for kayak fisherman, this time we'll be launching from Wilson Bay to explore north up the coast towards Te Kouma harbour in our sea kayaks. This is a pretty piece of coastline with rocky cliffs, a few caves and some beautifully sheltered sandy coves.
Paddling from Wilson Bay, on the corner of the Thames Coast Road / Manaia Road (just before the road heads inland -
see map), we'll hug the coastline and explore in to Kirita Bay, which has a few caves.

Carrying on north we'll pass the Matariki Islands, Ohauhunga Bay and go between Wekarua & Tataweka Islands and round in to Te Kouma Harbour where we'll stop on one of the secluded sandy beaches for lunch. We'll then head back down the coast to Wilson Bay.
In total we'll cover around 18-20km but there is the opportunity to make it slightly shorter if necessary, as there are plenty of places to stop for lunch. you will need to be paddle fit to do this one but as generally there are no scary beach landings on this part of the peninsular, then fit beginners are welcome.
As usual bring all your spare thermals, safety equipment (bilge pump & paddle float), lunch, plenty of drink and a hot drink if necessary. Whilst it may be warming up, please dress appropriately for the water temperature.
An early morning start on this one to get as much paddling in to the day as possible. So you can either meet at the Canoe & Kayak shop at 49 Totara Street to car pool or jump in the van/trailer (space on a first come first serve basis) at 7:30am or meet us directly at Wilson Bay boat ramp at 10am.
As always this trip is weather dependent. Tides will be outgoing to assist us in the morning. High Tide around 15:24. Off the water by 4:30pm at the latest. 2.5 hour drive home.
