Spring Shindig at Te Muri

Labour weekend 21-24 October.  Leaders Shaun and others.

This is a joint trip, combined with Adventure Paddler.

After a short drive, park your car at Sullivan's Bay and paddle around to Te Muri Beach Campground where we will be based for the duration. Enjoy a weekend of relaxed local/island trips in and around Mahurangi that will be planned for a strong beginner paddler. This is a chance for inexperienced kayak campers to broaden their knowledge and horizons.  For those wanting a shorter weekend, you are more than welcome to join us for a day or two. Please register even if you are just going for one day.

Fri 21st – Set up camp with the likelihood for some evening fishing or a local paddle

Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd – Depending on the winds and the paddlers, and in some cases the tides, a multitude of trips of trips or upskilling events will be on offer, such as explore the Mahurangi, circumnavigate Moturoa and Moturekareka and for the more adventurous Kawau Island. Maybe paddle to Orewa for breakfast and then back to Te Muri for some Surf or SKISL (skills practice). We could also have a new moon evening paddle if anyone is up for it.

Mon 24th – Break camp and depart Te Muri for Sullivan's Bay in the early afternoon.

The paddle to Te Muri is an easy 15 minutes south of Sullivan’s Bay.  Access to this campsite is only by foot (at low tide), or water, so it is never crowded.  There are long drop toilets and a tap with an untreated water supply - it is recommended that you boil the water.  For emergency access only, Hungry Creek Road (near Puhoi) goes right through to the farmhouse overlooking the campsite, but crosses private land.

Please make your own campsite bookings with Auckland Council, ph 09 301 0101, or online here...

A suggested camping gear list is available by email from Larraine, just contact me and ask for it larraine.nz@gmail.com

You will need to take the usual kayaking safety gear, full camping equipment, all of your food and a means to cook it. If there is any swell and you are planning on rock gardening or surfing, please take (and wear) your helmet where appropriate.

Getting there – head north on the motorway, 5km past the tunnel there is a sign to Mahurangi West, turn right and travel for about 5km.  The road then bends to the left and there is a road which branches off to the right.  Take the road to the right and follow it to the beach.  This is Sullivan’s Bay (aka Otarawao Bay on Google Earth). After loading your kayak, paddle south.  Te Muri is the next bay along.   If you would like some assistance with packing your kayak, or company for the paddle to the camp, please note that when you register, including the time that you are likely to be getting to Te Muri and someone will come to meet you.  Note that cell phone reception in the area is very poor.

This trip is suitable for confident beginners - distances will vary from 10km - 20km, or even 40km for those who are energetic and want to go around Kawau!

As we may be visiting Moturoa, Moturekareka, and/or Motuketekete Islands, note that these are Pest free Islands – please be responsible and  ensure that kayaks and gear are checked for pests – rodents, Argentine ants, Rainbow skinks, seeds - details here...
